    300tdi R380 mainshaft wear

I picked up a 110 300tdi ute off ebay late last year for a bit of a project and to use it as a weekend toy, anyway while driving it home from Brissy i noticed alot of freeplay in the driveline (aswell as a lot of other things). So one of my last jobs to do before i get it registered was to pull out the gearbox/transfer to check out the rattle coming from the clutch and while im their split the box and transfer to have a look at the mainshaft for wear.

This is what i found i don't think it would have lasted to much longer

Lucky i have a spare T/case out of my Td5 to go in it for now just have to get a new mainshaft...

It is a 94 model but it has had the T/case off it before because someone put a long bolt where it shouldn't be which has gone through to the inside of the T/case and been nicely bent and chewed at by the gears inside.

Obviously it never had a cross drilled input gear put in it.

Mine ex forestry '95 looked just like that
Just buy the updated cross drilled input gear, it will engage on about 20mm extra main shaft splines.
Ive done 30 something kays and no noticeble wear on inspection.
    Its like a pseudo-time bomb!

    Hi Shane,
that vintage also had the timing belt issue with misalignment causing shredding of the belt on the block or cover.
Might be worth checking if you haven't already

Hope yours has had the correction kit fitted if it needed it.

    Cheers,
    Paul.

Yeah already been in there and done that. No updated kit had ever been fitted.

As for the mainshaft i have a oil leak from where 5th and reverse gear extension housing is joined so i am going to be splitting it anyways.

It also now has front and rear lockers with 35's so better safe then sorry
