Probably just the pump but they can appear noisier than usual if the fuel level is low.
or on the way out

On the weekend as I was warming up the engine and walking around the back of the defender, there was a sound like a whining noise. I think it is some kind of fuel pump but I dont think it has made that noise before. It basically made the same noise the entire time the engine was going.
Any idea if this is a "Normal" noise or is something about to go bang?
it is a 99 TD5 defender.

should be the fuel pump.

i guess it's normal.... it still works =D

had the same problem 3 years ago , a very noisy high pitch noise from pump , drop the tank and fitted a brand new pump and guess what same fault, have put up with it since and only time it,s noisy is when the fuel is below half , good luck let me know how you went

Once when I heard a very loud in-tank fuel pump it turned out to be the outlet hose kinked 90% closed. I suspect it was over pressurising/blowing off its relief valve. Filter change time? Fuel pressure regulator too high?
I have had to replace the pump before, not cheap
Howveer you may be able to save it - mine started whining so I pulled it out and it was clogged with algae, a good clean and the whining went away. The hard part is getting the pump out, there's a thread on how to make an access hole in the rear floor somewhere.
