    Intercooler Upgrade or a Fan?

    Hey guys,

I'm looking to get more power from my 200tdi as it's lagging on the highway. Initially i considered swapping the tcase for a D1 box, but I'm starting to decide against that. Is it worth sending my intercooler to ASE and have it upgraded for $550?

Would fitting a decent electric fan to the intercooler make much of a difference? Also planning on the boost tweak.

    Hey Alex,

Don’t waste your time looking for an intercooler in Aus.

Stay up late tonight and give Ali-Sport a ring in the UK. I got my brand new full-size intercooler delivered to the door for about $500.00

    Cheers

Agree 100%. Allisport have apparently achieved sub 9sec 0-100kmp/h in a Puma with their performance upgrades.

Not cheap in UK terms, but compared to Australian prices...

    Drover,

You have done SO much to that lucky SVX of yours, haha. I might look into it, before I spend the cash, i'll pick up an electric fan from the wrecker and mount it behind the intercooler and do the injection pump tweak. It just needs a little more power :P

just had a look at the Allisport website,

    Cop a look at this......

A brand new direct replacement high performance aluminium intercooler from AlliSport Ltd.

This intercooler has been designed to replace the original smaller intercooler on the Land Rover Defender, Discovery or Range Rover 200 Tdi engine and has 50% more surface area than the original.

The greater cooling capacity will allow up to 20% increase in power and torque in the lower and mid-range revs.
Combined with the correct tuning (instructions included) power will increase from 111bhp standard to 135bhp with a similar increase in torque.
Customers regularly report 10-12% gain in economy.

    Specification:-
    • <LI class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt">50% greater surface area <LI class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt">external dimensions as per original intercooler <LI class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt">65mm Thick special high performance vacuum brazed core <LI class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt">Fully TIG welded in house <LI class=MsoNormal style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt">Makes full use of the space available whilst keeping external dimensions the same

Now im thinking of going to the wreckers and picking up a big intercooler from a Supra or something and retro fitting it... more surface area and a cheaper option methinks.

    Or this one.

Land Rover Defender 200 Uprated Double Core Intercooler | eBay

I have toyed with the idea of buying a complete TD5 front, radiator, panel, condensor and intercooler and fitting it to my TDi.

dont go playing with things like supra intercoolers. Intercoolers are designed for the engine and turbo, they need to complement each other as a system.

Fitting a fan will do nothing for your intercooler, ie you are traveling at 100km on the road and that will be pushing more air past the intercooler than any fan that you could fit. A better designed intercooler with higher flow rate and surface area is the answer, that with a fuel and boost tweak will have you smiling .

At the moment then $800 for an Allisport full size is well out of my pocket. I'm thinking of doing something along these lines:

    What do you think?
