Pedro,

The 90 is considerably lighter than a 110 and 11.5km/litre (8.7litre/100km) is not unheard of. You have to drive like a granny to achieve this though, early shifts and optimum revs in every gear etc.

The honest answer is that for a vehicle shaped like a fridge or a garden shed, peripheral influences like tyre size and engine management has much less to do with consumption than driving style. I can easily get 10.8km/litre on average, but the wife cannot get it better than 9.4km/litre in the same car. She usually gets a whole lot less than that though as she drives the 90 like it’s a soft top roadster! (I’ve already been told she’ll be getting a DC100/Defender 2 Sport! )

There has never been a Land Rover engine that forgave a heavy foot and the only way you’ll get better consumption is to develop a lot of patience and to adapt your driving style to suit.
