    180 deg thermostats ok??

    just pulled my rad out and found the condenser is pretty dirty and bent up at the top where the diagonal braces come up to the cross bar for the bonnet catch. i think i will get the grinder out and take a few mm off these braces so the new condenser doesn't rub on them. also found the bolts for the thermo fan have rusted away. took much hassle and the purchase of a pair of pointy nose vise grips to carefully pull these bolts free.

    really annoyed at this situation, as a LR mechanic had the radiator out a few months ago to do the timing belt. i asked him to make sure everything was top notch. what does it take for a mechanic to actually care enough to take action on four rusted-to-buggery steel bolts on the condenser right in front of the rad he removed and replaced?? they even re-gassed the crappy old thing!!

    i am gonna replace the thermostat while i am at it. does anyone know if they make one cooler than 180 degrees?

    Its good that you have been able to repair the vehicle.

    I ask, how long did it take for the repairs you made take?

    most mechanics have learnt that they get burnt by customers who say bugger off I'm not paying x amount to replace 4 bolt you must be kidding mate.

    I would be surprised if the the themostat is 180 degrees to mate. double check that.

    time taken

    it took about three hrs to pull everything out - of course the condenser is still in it - waiting for the mobile guy to drain the gas. first time i have pulled a landy rad out, so should be quicker next time. neat the way the rad and intercooler rest on pegs underneath.

    the condenser is getting replaced with a slightly smaller one to help improve airflow to the radiator.

    original thermostat is 88deg celcius and 192 deg F. i was told there is one that rates at 180 deg F. that would suit me better in the hot north.

    the Landy mechanic i saw today also told me to look at the front of the viscous fan and see if there is oil there. he is right - it is leaking so that may have been contributing the hot temps on hills. here goes another few hundred bucks! at least she will be running fantastic now

    interesting that the thermostat housing has no gasket - apparently the rubber ring on the actual thermostat does the job.

    Grounded,rod the rad,fit new viscous if knackered,EL ford fans screw straight on and give it a flush and clean and refill with Texaco extra cool gold coolant and fit new thermostat and top and bottom hoses and fan belt.My Tdi has gone through many outback summers without an issue,it's all about keeping the cooling system in good condition.
