    Fitting polyairs

After having polyairs in the Landcruiser & deciding they are the way to go for Towing a Caravan I ordered a new set for the Defender prior to towing the Van around for a few weeks but upon unpacking them I was a bit upset at the crappy top plate that needs to be bolted to the top of the spring perch.

So I re-fitted my 130 helper springs instead

When I get home I'll see if I can work out a better way.

    Anybody here fit their own?

The instructions say to drill 4 holes & bolt the top plates on , but it dont say where to drill them & dont say to avoid drilling thru the spring seat.
Its a really dodgy setup to me. I imagine there are polyair fitted defenders out there with the springs riding on the 4 bolts

Im thinking of cutting that top plate down to a disc that fits below the top spring perch just like the 130 inner spring locator & mig tacking it inplace.
    any thoughts on that.

anybody got a better setup & if so any chance of some pics.
    thanks Don

This post has a link to a suggestion about how to fit them.

    Firestone Coilrite Airbags

I finished up doing something different. I bought Firestone bags and air lines from the US for half the price in Aus and made up my own top and bottom plates. I turned them up from HDPE on a wood lathe. As well as the ones that fitted inside the coils to support the bags, I made a plate from thinner HDPE to go on top of the spring mounts in the hope that it would keep stones from getting in places where I didn't want them.

I thought the same as you. Flick the crappy top plates into the scrap.
Pull the top mount for the inner spring. Turn down the OD of the top rubber mount to wedge inside the ID of the inner spring mount. Voila!

    Thanks for your help guys,
Polyair should be ashamed of themselves for not thinking out the top mount,

Here is my solution, bear in mind I'm no engineer !

cut disc out of crap polyair mount, disc OD = same as 130 inner spring top spring retainer (shown under the top plates)
(dogdy bro's method - due lack of proper tools I cut it out with angle grinder )

weld supplied bolts to plate & some nuts to locate the new top plate in the same style as the 130 retainer

    test fit

coat of paint and bobs your uncle

Perfect & elegant, & no holes have to be drilled in chassis, Bit of scrap aluminium strap to hold top plate in place - but probably not needed.

    cheers ..Don
