    Hi swivelrat,

What year model/engine/gearbox is your 130? Is the clicking noise constant or when you're changing certain gears or all gears?

Thanks for responding, its curly one. Its a 1995 defender with 300tdi, not sure on gearbox.
The knocking is in all gears even in low range and reverse. When moving it disappears when clutch is depressed and when freewheeling in neutral. I thought it could be the gearbox oil pump but I guess that would be being driven in neutral standing. Cant get the same noise from the motor at any revs standing clutch in or out. The noise is most noticable on decompression and when driving at low speeds but this is probably because I cant hear it over the rest of the racket in the cab.
I guess with these things, its a best guess but I didnt want to leave it untill it fails completely.

    thoughts.

Unless someone has changed it, it would be an R380 gearbox. As for the noise, I'm at a loss sorry. Someone else more mechanically minded will probably jump in though .

Actually, are you sure it's the gearbox? Could it be a universal joint and it's just a coincidence that you've just changed the gearbox oil?

thought about that but the noise is associated with engine revs not vehicle speed, so I would think that rules out cvs wheel bearings transfer box and prop shafts. I think its something to do with the main shaft, clutch or crank unfortunately. All big jobs. I would have thought anything with the main shaft would have resulted in some synchro issues or other noises. I ve never had a gearbox failure so I cannot diagnose.

HI Swivelrat. Rainman is right to suggest looking at other possibilities. One way to check if it is a uni joint is to chock the wheels on a level surface, release the hand brake and put the gearbox in neutral and climb under the vehicle and try to twist the prop shaft by hand. there should be some slack in the diff but not in the uni. Compare all the unis to see if any feel/look different.Another way is to raise the front OR rear axle so that the wheels are off the ground ,make sure the centre diff lock is disengaged, start the car and let the clutch out gently in first gear. The car should spin the raised wheels but not drive off the wheels stands.Listen for noise. Repeat for the other end.If the noise continues no matter what, then the gearbox/transfer case is suspect.Good luck. 130man.

Put the Transfer Case into Neutral, Then drive thru the gears in the main G'box , If the clicking is there you know its not past the transfercase.

Does the Noise dissapear when you litghtly put your foot on the clutch rather than fully disengage clutch if so could be clutch throwout bearing.

VMX M? Castrol Syntrans is dearer but far superior.
