Biggest single nut that I can think of is the front wheel bearing adjustment nut @ 2"1/6' or 54mm.

IIRC - The hub nut is the biggest.

FWIW - To prep a toolkit, when I do any work on the car, I keep any tools I use to one side. By the time I go on a trip, I should have gone through most of the car & therefore have all necessary spanners, sockets, special tools, etc... already put to one side.

...but that's assuming you have enough time.

I find carrying a METRINCH set of sockets and open/ring spanners helps a lot (this is a legacy of having a Series and a Defender). They're also good for damaged bolt heads. I also carry a Sandvik shifter that has very narrow jaws, is precision built (doesn't jiggle) and opens all the way to 36mm. For very large nuts (such as trailing arms) I prefer to use a socket, but on a trip, I can get away with a small pipe wrench. A good pair of regular and pointy nose vise grips have universal applications. The narrow ones can fit in behind stuff to hold nuts in place while you un/tighten etc.

A #2 Phillips Screwdriver for most things and a fatter one (can't remember the size, and a couple of flat heads. Some Land Rovers came with a reversible phillips / flat head screw driver as part of the kit.

Ditch the wind up jack and put a bottle jack from a disco 1 or RRC under the drivers seat. I can't understand why the manufacturer of the car with the worlds longest wheel travel chooses to issue a jack that lifts the body instead of the axle. By the time you get the wheel off the ground, the car is teetering on a stick.

Get a viscous fan spanner too, it's much easier to remove the fan and sort things out (like broken fan belts or worn pulley bearings) than scraping your fingers trying to get past the fan blades.

a 3/8 socket set saves space a weight, use adaptors for hex keys and torx bolts (door strikers for example).

Carry a T55 Torx bit for the gearbox oil filler.

A good magnet is also worth including in the kit.

In the TD5 (Disco) I also carry a Hawkeye electronic prognosticator.

    Red face

cheers all, already sorted the jack issue and torx bits, but was more interested in what spanner/socket size not counting the hub , i figure ill try and knock up a viscous spanner even though i have small hands lol.
i should pop up a list of what ive done on the car and what were considering packing as i get my head around 4 to 5 months 2 up in a car.
as i see it light and roof rack free is the way to go.
    ps of in april
