    Puma Defender

Help, my MY09 defender won't start, had the RACV out to look at it, he couldn't start it either. There is power to the ignition, all the correct lights on dash come on, but the starter won't turn over. He did the screwdriver test on the starter and it turned over, so it is not the starter, but when you turn the ignition over to the start the engine it does nothing. The battery has plenty of charge, the trouble seems to be in the wiring some where, is there a fuse or relay some where that could not be working. Have checked all the fuses and they all seem to be OK. I started it yesterday and went into town and had no problems, just went to start it this morning and nothing there. We are camped at the moment up near Elmore north of Bendigo. the RACV guy is ringing Land Rover on Monday to see if they can help.

    Thanks
    Geoff.

    Sounds like the immobiliser.

Try replacing the battery in the key fob just in case - it's a CR2032. Also, in case you aren't aware, the fob must be within a few inches of the ignition slot to deactivate the immobiliser.

Do you have the EKA for the vehicle? If so try that too. LR can get you the EKA from the VIN.

I tried to get the EKA code for mine and LR said no.My L322 did this very same thing and it was a flat key fob battery. Pat

Try disconnecting the battery under the seat for a few minutes . Sometimes this resets everything.

Not sure if the Puma has one, but have you tried pushing the inertia switch? Maybe it got triggered somehow.

Sounds as if there is an issue with the 10AS unit. First thing to do is to do a hard reset, disconnect the battery for 10 mins to allow any stored capacitance to drain. Re connect and see if that mobilizes the immobilizer when starting. If not you will need a diagnostic machine that can access the 10AS so that you can disable both the immobilizer and the passive immobilizer to basically turn the 10AS into a CDL unit. If the Puma still doesn't start then the fault lies elsewhere.
Here are the 10AS wiring diagrams:

Worth mentioning the 10AS is accessible (kind off) if you remove the front right speaker. It's green in colour and against the firewall.

    Hi,

I have a 2009 Puma cab chassis, and this is my experience only on this vehicle, not any others.

DON'T disconnect your battery until you have read the instructions in your book.

These are: Loosen earth lead but don't disconnect at all, windows up, no power drain on battery, insert key, ignition on for a few seconds, then off and remove key, now disconnect the loose earth lead.

Then the battery can be re connected and a previously working vehicle will start.

If I don't do this, the starter will not engage.

    cheers
