    200Tdi Timing Belt Tools

    Hey guys,

I've just changed the timing belt in my 200tdi without any of the timing tools - and I thought I could get away without locking the crank - I can't.

Before doing the belt the engine was running marvellously but now it will barely start and if it does the throttle is unresponsive and lots of white smoke. I'm guessing that timing is out at the IP and the white smoke is unburnt fuel. My question is - I really don't want to drop the $300 for a timing belt kit considering i'd only use it once. Could anyone in Sydney loan me one for a few hours? Beers and exchange of stories will result.

    Thanks guys,
    Alex

I don't know if the 200TDi is different from the 300TDi as far as timing goes, but a 10mm drill and you can make your own flywheel TDC lock is all you need, there are a few posts (search) on here about fabricating your own tool, Regards Frank.

i done my belt twice now u dont need the tools line the crank up on the mark then set an injector pump and cam marks aprox one tooth to past thier marks , i then slip the belt half one every gear then try fit the idler turn motor ova by hand all marks should line up now , its all a bit fiddley
but before u pull it all apart u can can adjust the injector pump timing thru the cover on the left hand side nxt to the water pump thiers 3 bolt loosen all of them an then thiers nut in the middle of thise use a 17 mm spanner to advance the pump tighten up the 3 small bolts an an see how it sounds if it rattles really bad retard the timming it can be hard to get right be carefull to much advance will kill ur motor
