The ECU sits on the fire wall, directly behind the engine. It is mounted nice and high, but I very much doubt that it is water proof or even water resistant.

ABS, traction control and heap of other electrics are under the driver seat and again are not water proof.

Mulgo, supply a product called the X-Box that relocates all electrics from the under the drivers seat to dedicated metal box that mounts under the centre consul. This effectively increases the wading depth by about 250mm.

I have included a link to the X-Box

Apparently the little box of tricks on top of your accelerator pedal is the first thing to spit the dummy when it gets too wet.

and that "little box of tricks' will stop you for sure. I had a Td5 and the throttle potentiometer played up and no one in Newman could diagnose the prob.
Others tried over the phone but none picked it and the car had to be transported back to Perth (nearly 3 weeks!!!) for it to be fixed.
I don't know how you'd go about water proofing the thing and wonder why it wasn't done by LR themselves.

...a good amount of Lanolin, Corrosion X ,ACF50 or any other lubricant that can be used on electrical components will go a long way to make the Throttle position sensor and its electrical connections water resistant ..

Upgrade the seals on the doors and the water comes in a lot slower

I've had mine with water over the top of the bonnet on two creek crossings when I went to Cape York, a bit of water in the footwells but it made it through - I was only in deep water for about 10-15 seconds, I would not be trying a very long water crossing.

I was also told by the Land Rover dealer that the throttle potentiometer was the first thing to get wet and would stop it dead. I'm not sure if an ABS or traction control problems would stop the car from going, but might cause some expensive damage. I did not get one drop of water in the driver's side seat box, no dust either, it seems to be watertight up to the lid, and even that could be sealed with duct tape if necessary. Not sure how to waterproof the throttle pot - have not looked at it - silicone grease in the connectors would help. What would a spare throttle pot cost - might be worth carrying one just in case, anyone know?

I got stuck in a river for 24 hours in my Puma, and the ABS system was the major casualty. It didn't stop the car from running, but did cost my insurance in the region of $9,000 to replace on my return.

Its not a Puma, but this may help...or make you laugh; Its the Water Ingress "Service Rectification" Manual.

Read the forward/opening statement. Made me laugh "Due to the nature of the design and construction of the Defender vehicle [waterproofing] can prove fairly difficult. The fact that water moves in seemingly random directions also adds to the problem"

    LMAO

I would say that since the body has not really been changed or should I say construction, since at least 1985, you have like everyone else a sieve

Yep. Gave the tps a good coating of lanolin years ago and it has been underwater several times with no ill effect.
    Albeit fresh not salt water.
