oh and i forgot, somehow this land rover had been previously registered in victoria..
Hi guys,a mate of mine recently told me about a bog standard 94 200tdi defender 90 that had been brought in as a "parts vehicle" or something and had the compliance plate removed possibly to save money or somthing.. anyway my question is: Is it possible to get it registered at all? sounds like a good truck but no rego would be a bummer!,thanks in advance to anyone with some info
cheers

Seems like a simple call to the relevant State transport department would provide the most accurate answer to your question - at the end of the day it is their call regardless of what a hundred opinions from us might offer up.
Seems odd that it was 'bought in as parts' and your next post mentions it as having previously been registered in Victoria.
Cheers,
Hi mate,
I would be wary of car or parts "rebirthing". It is unusual for a compliance plate to be removed for any reason. I can't see how it would save them money. I would do your homework on the background of the vehicle, vin, engine and chassis numbers.
Cheers,
Aaron
yes I'd advise caution,
- Do you have any evidence of registration in Victoria? It may be sales hype.
- Check the Written Off Vehicle Register. A Statutory Write-Off is supposed to have the VIN on the compliance plate struck through with a chizel. Unscrupulous people will then remove the plate to hide the fact that it's a Statutory Write-off. Statutory & Repairable Write-Offs can never be registered in NSW.

You say "brought in" so I assume brought in from overseas for parts - then it would never have had a compliance plate.
To prevent rebirthing these vehicles are usually cut in half - I guess yours is still in tact which is unusual. If imported as a parts vehicle it cannot be registered unless you put a new chassis etc under it and then it would be registered under the identity of the chassis - assuming it was not written off.

If as Garry has rightly pointed out, the vehicle was brought in from overseas, then there are a number of issues that have to be addressed.
The VIN has to have a "Vehicle Import Approval" from the Australian Department of Infrastructure & Transport, issued prior to the vehicle arriving in an Australian port. The vehicle being 1994 should have come with 3 sets of papers, an original for the state registration authority, a second for an engineer to check the compliance of the vehicle and apply an Australian "Used Import Plate" or "Personal Import plate", the third original document is supposed to remain with the vehicle.
Once again, a chassis/VIN without an Import Approval will never be registered within Australia.

Hey guys, sorry for the delay..and thanks for your info,it was very helpful.I have found out some new info on the 90 that i thought might be of interest.
first of all i have a the copy of the VIA that came with this vehicle when it was bought, and it says it was approved conditional-dismantle,"on the condition that the vehicle will not be used in transport in australia and that you or a person under your supervision or control dismantles the vehicle before any part of it is supplied to the market as vehicle components"
now according to the VIA it is a 92 model and was imported in 97.. the thing is it had victorian rego when purchased.. so are the laws a bit looser down there or?......
either way sounds like its destined to be parts.. what do you guys think?
Perhaps the inspector who registered the vehicle missed the fact that it was imported as parts. The fact that it did get Victorian rego makes it potentially registrable again, but first you would have to make sure that the rego was actually for that 90 and not just carrying the plates of another vehicle. If you get caught doing that, it is a serious crime with a fine in the tens of thousands of dollars and possible gaol time.
In any case to get rego you need evidence of the previous Rego, and either the personal import plate, the used import plate or an engineers certificate of the vehicles compliance with 1992 ADR.
