    Dodgy headlight - no lowbeam

Before I pull my headlight apart (a bit of a bugger when your travelling), would the fact that high-beam works but lowbeam doesn't in one of my headlights mean a blown bulb. If so, is it replaceable, or do I need to replace the whole light? FWIW, the brand is Wipac.

i have that problem in my drivers headlight atm.....wish i had a bulb when i had the light out chasing the snake the other day

its probably easiest replacing the bulb by pulling the light out otherwise it could be a pain getting the clip and dust cap back on...

you need to remove the four screws that hold the black surround on, remove the four screws that hold the indicator and park lights in. than its just the one screw about 4 o'clock than rotate the light fitting clockwise to free it from the adjusters.......

there might be an easier way, i have an after market fuel filter blocking the hole inside the guard to the back of the headlight assembly

    1. Check for loose connection!
    2. Probably a blown (low beam) filiament in the dual filiament sealed beam... ?

Any standard 7"/178mm dual filiament sealed beam ought do the job. (there may be a difference between LH/RH replacements for focussing purposes)

could be the time to spend a bit more and change over to halogens

Did a quick check on the British Parts UK website to get an idea ...standard sealed beam replacement Defender 1992 -2008 A$23 each...

but there is also a halogen conversion for $37 each ...all for RHD vehicles...
    Defender--Lights-Lens

you might be able to get a conversion set from a general parts place. I don't know but Hella might still even have an after market conversion set for standard 7" sealed beams... (Well they did in 1972 when I converted my LC 6 cyl, 4sp GTR spec 4dr Torana!!
    Good luck!

Edit: yep Hella part No. 5604 178mm (7") hi/low beam halogen conversion kit

Edit 2: check out the Narva equivalent for A$101 local price (includes 2 lights plus halogen bulbs and covers etc http://onlineauto.com.au/product.php...cat=277&page=1

I've got the standard halogen H2/H4 setup in the P38 but with +50% bulbs... same wattage (55/60) but more efficient... big difference

    Safe travels!
    cheers

Are halogen lights legal, or is it only HID that are illegal?

    Hi Ranga
Absolutely no worries with Halogens as long as you have adjusted them properly...no different to replacing your sealed beams...

it's the HIDs that can cause legal issues I believe

    cheers

You can pick up a standard sealed beam headlight to replace yours at any supercheap or autobarn or repco.

When removing the surround etc it is easy to drop the screws, which will fall into a place they can never be retrieved from.

DO NOT allow this to happen.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

Yeah as vlad said you can get them from the repo and auto barn. I got my last ones from Super cheap. A lot cheaper than land rover parts places.
After all the are the same as in the Suzuki serria, RRC and most other cars that had the round head lights.

    Perfectly legal

Halogen inserts give more light where you need it.

Worth buying good ones, though depends on how much night driving you're doing..

The ONLY advantage of sealed beams is that they're 101% waterproof, so if you do a lot of submarine-driving, AND you don't travel much/fast at night.....

But I reckon if the rears of the lights are under water, then you're cactus anyway !

    Magnetized screwdrivers are good.

    Hi Ranga,
    Have you checked your fuses?
I think there is a separate fuse for high & low beam for each light.
Someone else might be able to confirm this (or not).

    Cheers,
    Paul.

Aren't they halogen lights already? My 02 130 certainly does have halogens.
