    Puma splutter

    Hi All,

I have taken the plunge and bought a 2011 110 puma, very very impressive, especially comming from a 130 TDI Lovely to drive, quiet! and dare I say zippy (for a fender anyway) Now on to the not so happy stakes! Does any one else have any of the following

    1. A serious splutter, jerk at about 2000rpm in 2nd gear
    2. find it incredibly difficult to change from 1st to 2nd without a jerky jerk, I realise 1st is very low geared
    3. on deacceleration another type of jerky, vibrating rumbly sound and motion.

Increadbly hard to describe, buts its just not right.

    Cheers
    Mal

i have noticed a very slight splutter in mine occasionally going from closed throttle to slight throttle openings coasting at high speed about 2000rpm, i think this is also a bit noticable on the 1st to 2nd change because of the big gap between gears - very noticable on the sand.. mine wasnt as bad as some of the others i drove though.

Have you also noticed some throttle lag? where you either go from closed or light throttle to wide open throttle or vice versa and it takes about half a second for the the engine to react, this was also noticable on all the puma's i drove and really annoys me, unfortunatly i doubt a retune would fix it though.

on the deceleration noise, mine has some drive train clatter when coasting at 80kph or faster when off the throttle, this i didnt really notice on other trucks i drove but i didnt spend enough time in them to really get a chance to have a good listen. It sounds like excessive backlash - similar sound the clatter you get in low range with CDL locked when you back off, i will get that one checked out by LR when it gets its first service though.

I get a bit of clunk when changing 1 to 2, but I've given up wondering about it, some times it's smooth sometimes it clunks away.
I have no experience with the other issues you are asking. I'd keep a diary or a recording on the phone and then talk to the dealer. Doesn't sound right.

Sounds to me you have a typical Puma. However I think engine issue is related to the EGR valve, mine does not do this as it is not enabled. My gearbox was a shocker when new but with 17K on it is much better. The gear change does deteriate as the oil heats up as we have noticed.

I used to hear clunks if I change from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd while the RPM is less than 2500. From 3rd gear onward, I can change gears quite smoothly at 2000. Unfortunately the gearbox was smashed 2 weeks ago, and the dealer couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. So they fit a new gearbox in my puma and adjusted the hydraulic system of the clutch. Now no more clunks when changing gears(1-2 or 2-3) at 2000 and clutch engagement point becomes very low, I just need to raise my left foot a little bit to move the truck.

Get a BAS or Alive chip and get the EGR switched off, thats what I'm doing as the sputtering under power gives me the ****s. Pat

I contacted Gary at Alive and got the Atric device, you can remap and return to standard at will. The real bonus is that you are protecting your engine from re introducing combustion by products. No more chuka chuka when you switch off. My Puma 110 now goes like rattle to 160 km/h, but is generally slightly more economical. The power characteristics allow smoother gear changes and it is so much more driveable, better torque spread. You have maybe noticed that your engine runs better less flat spots during warm up, it will be when remapped like this all the time but better. This is due to the EGR valve not operating at this time. BAS would also be as good from what I have told for similar dollars.
