    New 2.2 Puma

Been driving my new 2.2 Puma for a week now. Was told buy the dealer that I would be getting a 2.4 but on driving it out of the yard immediately noticed that it sounded very different. Checked the book at my first stop to discover it is a 2.2!

Feels exactly the same as the 2.4 but just far quieter - and different noises. When I have the window down I can now really hear the air getting sucked in the engine intake.

Does anyone have a consolidated list of what has actually changed - other than the engine?

Quite a bit i'm told there is a full brief here:

    Defender 2012MY Press Kit

". A new, full acoustic engine cover replaces the previous splash cover,"

So it's now got a cover over the whole engine. Get some pictures if you can. I gather it's a bit like a TD5 with a full cover.

Unfortunately the media releases are the only official information available. LR still haven't updated their website (in AS or Intl).

For pictures see: Defender2 - View topic - MY2012 ENGINE

There is a good Tech Drawing of the Acoustic Cover as well.

Haven't had to fuel up yet so I don't know whether the fuel cap restraint is a good idea that will just get in the way. And the "weight reduction" of the rear door handle is just funny.

Next problem is to find a new workshop manual - why isn't Topix working? (or is it just me)

it would be good to do a comparo on noise, cause that 2012 donk looks a lot like my 2010. The cowling on the top of the motor looks smoother, perhaps more stylish, but I'm struggling to see how it's quieter.

Which raises the question if it's a "Puma". Knowing Land Rover there would be a new name for the 2.2 engine developement program...

Thank bugger the Td5 never got known as The Storm after "Project Storm" which was it's engine developement program name same as the 2.4 Tdci program was known as "Project Puma".

    2.2 puma

possibly due to the fact that the MY12 is not a 2.2 version of the 2.4, but a completely new 2.2 engine.....

My point exactly... brand new engine program, brand new project name other than "Puma"?

For a completely new engine it looks pretty much the same (other than the new engine cover), shares a lot of major parts, has been in the transit vans for several years and shares the engine code "PUMA".

PUMA is name given to this group of engines by Ford, not Land Rover.

    See table below -

    ·3ZSD ("Puma")
    ·3.1 - 2.0
    ·3.2 - 2.2
    ·3.3 - 2.4
    ·3.4 - 2.5 (Mazda WLC)
    ·3.5 - 3.0 (Mazda WEC)
    ·3.6 - 3.2
    Item 3.6, 3.2 litre/5 Cylinder is the new Ranger/BT 50 engine.

TDCI ZSD (“PUMA”) 2.0L 2.2L 2.4L 2.5L 3.0L - 14 Turbo 16V Intercooled - Ford Mondeo, Ford Transit, Jaguar x Type, LDV, London Taxi TX1 & TX2, DI Citroen Jumper, Peugeot Boxer, Fiat Ducato & Land Rover Defender

This link has a new style door handle that looks a lot better than the plastic ones on the 2.4. Have they made it to Australia?

Or even worse, "Gemini" for the Tdi.
