    S.O.S Stranded Electrical Fault

    G'day Landy Enthusiasts.
(...why do I love this flaming truck so much...)

I'm in a bit of strife with an electrical fault and I have no idea...

    Defender 300tdi 130 95.

Started with a fault on headlights with only low beam working, switching to high beam loses ALL head lights.

In an attempt to isolate the problem, all fuses were double checked and checked again. I then removed one relay front right under the bonnet in an attempt to find the problem, and caused a short when removing the relay. The sparks resulted in loss of ALL power in the vehicle, no lights, fm/am, not even hazard lights.

I have checked fuses again including under bonnet 60/80/30 Amp fuses to no obvious cause.

What am I missing, or need to look for.

Your kind suggestions appreciated in advance.

PS: Tools available are extensive sockets, test light and multimeter and other misc. tools.

    1. Check at the positive battery terminal for a fusible wire link to the main vehicle harness, that will probably have blown.
    2. Your headlamp switch has probably melted, a common problem especially if higher wattage globes have been fitted. You will need a new switch, and an upgrade to the wiring with relays to take the headlamp load.

I'm no expert, but the initial problem may have been in the dip switch/indicator stalk. I hope I've attached a workshop manual for Defender which has wiring diagrams at the end of it. Good luck with the sleuthing.

"fusible wire link to the main vehicle harness"

Could you pls give me an idea as to where this fuse would be in relation to the battery and what it would look like.

    Cheers

A fusible link does not look like a regular fuse. It is a short piece of cable which is designed to internally fail when overloaded. I have no idea where on the defender it is located but you should look at any power wires which lead to the vehicle harness either from the main positive terminal of the battery or the starter motor. Fusible links I have seen on Falcons were 2-3 inches of cable with a rather loose insulation. My RAVE manual doesn't cover deefers but there are certainly fusible links in discos of the era.

Some are attached to the positive battery terminal, not sure on the 300TDI.

Should be attached to the end of the bolt that goes through the Positive + terminal clamp, it should be a thick Brown wire less than a foot long going to the Large Fuse box under the bonnet next to the battery, Regards Frank.

    Problem solved!
It ended up being a faulty relay after all fuses were double checked. Changing out the relay solved the faulty lights and the very "dead" car was caused by the park lights being left on and the battery draining. Thanks to all for the suggestions
