    TD5 engine stopped

Today I was driving my defender 130 along the freeway at about 110kph and it died, I coasted to a stop, My wife towed me home with her landcruiser, you can hear the fuel pump run but now when you crank it it fires for a second and stops, It seems to have fuel pressure if you undo the fuel filter drain and turn on the ignition it sprays out , any Idears ? what I should check first Thanks

Check for oil at the ecu as oil will interfere with sensors such as the crankshaft posiiton sensor.

Have the ECU interrogated by way of Nanocom or similar (LR diagnostics), revealing your location typically evokes help offers from owners of these gadgets.

It does sound like a dodgy CKP though.

Tried replacing fuel filter? Is the MIL illuminated?

Hi If you dont have nanocom then try the crank possition sensor, The TD5 will run with every sensor disconnected except this one,
when you crank is the red light in the speedo lit, it sounds as if the engine is immobolised they do fire once then do nothing.
    Good luck

Hmmm - pretty rare for a CPS (Crank Position Sensor) to allow the engine to actually fire and then stop. Normally if the CPS is U/S - you can crank the engine for as long as the battery will allow and it won't start.....

Did you happen to turn the lights, wipers or any other electrical component on just before the engine died while you were driving?

    Oh no

Cant believe it but driving along the same bit of road as the first time it stopped, it did it again, It happens just after pulling up a 1 klm long hill at about 100kph then leveling for another 400 metres still going fine on light throttle then nothing, I tried to start it fires for a second then stops, checked fuel return at engine end it had heaps still wont start, then disconnected battery and reconnected still wont start, then unplug ed wiring to front of head and reconnected and away it went again so this time my wife didn't have to tow me home with her landcruiser, Hmm What could it be, Thanks Bruce

Does the engine malfunction indicator come on when this happens? (the yellow engine symbol in the dash)
