According to some it's not a Defender wave anymore, because it started with Series Landies as a Land Rover wave. Pffftt. Those Disco vultures swoop fast!

When I first bought my Tdi i drove off the dirt road where I bought it on to a 3 to 4 lane dual carriage hwy. There was another defender in the first group of cars coming the other direction. I was in the slow lane and he was in the slow lane with cars in between, so would be apex 6 lanes away and he had his hand out the window over 100m away and at the time of passing probably half his upper body was out the window waving extreamly enthusiastically :-). Id wanted a series/defended since I was about 12 so driving my first one for the first time experiencing that from the first group of cars I came across, I couldn't wipe the smile off my face for the 2000km trip back home (even after cooking the head half way not being familiar with the tdi "temperature guage").

As I've mentioned previously as kid in the seventies we had a 'Jeep' wave and when we went on holidays in Dad's Wagoneer, often towing a van it became pretty much a '4WD' wave as 4wd's weren't that common travelling, so it didn't matter whether it was a Jeep, Series, FJ40 or 55, G60 Patrol, Scout, whatever, we'd enthusiastically wave if it was obvious people were holidaying/touring.

Not from a fellow green oval, but I've noticed lately that I have been getting more than the odd "nod" here and there from motorcyclists. Not sure if comes from vehicle appreciation, or appreciation for giving way / looking out for them

I've had a fair bit of similar courtesy nods from motorcyclists in Canberra. I think it's a mixture of both

I grew up on a farm and we waved to everyone, since they were usually neighbours. We had a Land Rover, a Jeep and a Vauxhall, but we still waved.

Peeps in the bush have always waved, based on friendliness and shared experience driving in the bush, although frequency is dropping IME. ...But this is an entirely different phenomenon in comparison to the Defender wave.

We have a small property just outside of Albury, been there about 25+ years. I haven't lived there for a few years now though, but am back there floating around every few weeks, couple of months. I'm fairly well known.
A fire went through the area a while ago, and on my arrival to inspect our property (4th day there), I was abused as a parasite just out for a gander to ogle at the aftermath of the fires.
Farms are getting smaller, people less friendly. Once we'd wave at everyone, now I hardly know anyone So rare to get a wave in our little community these days, but I still do it.

Just spent the last week in Victoria - south west of Geelong at a mates place. Went the whole week without seeing a Defender.

On my way home I got a nice wave from a 110 in Riddles Creek and on the Albury bypass a nice 90 came up a on-ramp. As I over took it we got a wave in - he followed me to Holbrook when I turned off for a break - nice wave as he continued his journey

Another good day for Sydney waving. Four waves from four tidy Defenders on the trip home this afternoon, plus one out of one on the way to the office this morning.

All in all February has been a good wave-zone so far.
