If its legal for LR to sell a tanami defender with bonnet tool kit and its legal for the army to run into general public pedestrians with a bonnet tool kit it's legal for you to have one. Go and see someone with a bit more knowledge, not just applying a blanket rule.
Yes the ADF can ignore suspend rules relating to its own employees in regards to safety, unions, workcover etc but in regards to public liability they must follow the same rules so if a tool kit is a hazard to a pedestrian in an impact why arent the cops pulling over every adf defender? Also why arent every series landie with a spare tyre mount kit for the bonnet being defected?
Hi its QLD not VIC but I have had my 130 road worthy with bonnet mounted spare and guard monted tool holders OK .

I've had a shovel mounted on the drivers side front garud for over two years and never had a issue with it. Mine was purchased through Paddocks in England. An Axe is secured standing up beside the spare wheel in the Tub.
Cheers

Interesting,
I was told by a cop in NSW the other day that the new interpretation of the rule in NSW is that any external fitment must be judged in relation the use of the vehicle and the object attached to the vehicle.
So the logic being a police car could have aerial mounted on the bull bar and in their view be compliant while the same aerial on a "private" car would be illegal.
I’ve got a bonnet mount for a spare wheel. I’m only going to put the wheel on when touring this should enhance my chance of being OK.
Road rules are not retrospective. Vehicles manufactured with tool holders on the bonnet/guards or spare wheel carriers on the bonnet are legal and will continue to remain so.
If you fit accessories that were optional on a vehicle available from the same manufacturer during the same time period then I cannot see any issue either.
Most cops are poorly versed in vehicle riles/ADRs etc...
all good replys went to land rover and they can get me the spade holder and that was it is there some where you can the adf ones
cheers blokes
I have a Tanami and have always wondered about the issue of an axe mounted on the bonnet. I've never had a problem but to be fair it isn't used that often (the car not the axe)
The roadworthy was carried out without tools in place (by the dealer), I fitted the tools later (first owner must have kept them). It also has a ladder obscuring the rear rego plate, I might have to modify this if I decide to use Eastlink/Citylink in the future.
The full Tanami Spec. is in this thread (post #17)
