i'm looking to get a spare wheel carrier for my defender and was wondering if people had preferences one way or the other. looking on ebay i found one for about $450 but it is plastic coated and i've seen what plastic coated exterior parts look like after a few years!
also, is it possible to find one that doesn't require drilling ?
thanks
paddy

x3 - consider yourself advised.
Keep in mind whatever you buy will have to hold your spare, which is very heavy. There are many reports of even higher end units having trouble (read: cracking)
I think Numpty on here had a Kamar which cracked, was replaced and cracked again.
Murray (Rijidij) makes easily the best carrier and it is designed specifically for the Defender. I own one and it is a work of art.

I have had a Kar-Mar on for the past few years, without any problems at all.
I use it as a ladder to the roof rack and regularly stand on the spare wheel when packing the rack. It has done lots on off roading and there is no indication of any cracking what so ever.
With that said, I wish I had waited for Ridjidij's, it is a class item.

The same factor that it is cooler/stronger than every other carrier....
Another member on this forum got Murray to add a chain saw shelf above the wheel, very cool. So think about your dream carrier then talk to murray.
Enjoy
