on the county the open right grill was just over the stock air intake
Am wanting to replace the current wing top grilles on my td5 defender as the plastic is cracked and discoloured. Saw a set of stainless steel grilles for left and right wing top and right side. Question I have is there a problem with replacing the 'closed' right hand wing top with an open grille allowing air in ? Is it closed for a reason ?
Thanks

I was thinking of using one of those ram scoops on the right side to improve the airflow around the box and floor. Trying to keep the temp down.
Pushkin,
Take the closed plastic one off and have a look at the many places where dust and rainwater will collect if you have an open grill. Everything will just fall straight through onto the wheel arch and find itself a spot to happily ferment...
Might be worth cutting and bolting a piece of rigid black plactic under the SS one?
I've got both open grille types on my County 110 and have not experienced any issues whatsoever.
Tiki.
There is nothing under there to cause any difficulty or problems so I can't imagine any issues.
All I'm saying is that its a blanking plate because there is no reason for it to open and when it's open it does let dust, organic matter and rain water in to collect in the fold behind/below the headlight as well as at the back of the arch.

Yeah I was thinking that, took a look and there's a couple of places that would pool water when parked, and some wiring which probably wouldn't appreciate a regular soaking.
Might bring it down to a restoration mechanic nearby and see if they could weld a small steel cover instead of plastic. Might look like the original if they could do it.
Been looking for a steel set that has a raised left wing top, a flat (or closed!) right wing top, and a flat right wing side but all the sets are either all raised or flat...
Saw some pics of a stainless steel snorkel on this forum and want one!!
I've never had a problem with the R/H vent being open, other than a driving light relay getting a bit of water on it, but that was my fault for mounting it too close to the opening.
I finally got around to making some stainless one's anyway.....Stainless Grills
