    Oh bother... snapped Banjo Bolt

    Hello All,

    I've got a Defender 110, 300tdi 1994 (though sometimes it feels like 1194)...

    Driving home tonight I smelt diesel. When I got home I looked under the bonnet and noticed a bit of diesel around the rearmost injector. Before Christmas I installed a new Spill return pipe assembly as the old one was perished. So first thing I tried tonight was to tighten the injector banjo bolts (part number:ERR1200) that integrate with the spill assembly. The two banjo bolt closest to the firewall are in a difficult (impossible) position when using a torque wrench (well mine anyway).. so torqueing them up accurately to the 9NM is not really possible (for me anyway)... so to cut a long story short I tightened the rear most banjo bolt and the bloomin' thing sheard off... on looking at what's left of it the metal looked pretty cheap and nasty (really granular) - not sure if it was age or a cheapo bolt)... of course the real reason is probably just my ham-fistedness...

    I managed to get the thread out but now I've got a nice hole there where the banjo bolt should be... oh and to make this even more interesting... the Mrs is away for a couple of days leaving me at home to chauffeur the rug rats about... there's a lesson in here somewhere

    so... my questions:

    1) anyone know where I could source a spare banjo bolt a.s.a.p. in Canberra? would the local LR dealership have any (for a 300tdi??) or any of the other auto shops? (obviously I'll be doing a ring around first thing in the morning)

    2) will turning the engine over result in 'bad things happening' - I assume lots of Diesel peeing everywhere? (in other words is it driveable to get the spare bolt or should I call a taxi?)

    3) are these bolts fairly generic i.e. could I use one from some other engine e.g. Landcruiser or something else?

    Any comments appreciated..

    How things I wouldnt recommend driving it as fuel will pour everywhere I say it would be a common thread size alright bring your broken banjo bolt to a wreckers and see if they have one on a engine they common on most diesel engines or if you are near a hydraulic company eg Pirtek etc. they might have something for you

    If you were in Perth I help you I have a load of banjo bolts off different engines if your stuck give me a pm and I can post a few types over to you if you do get one make sure you put in new copper washers to seal

    If the dealers / Pirtek can't help, try ringing a local diesel shop , as the part is a standard 6mm banjo bolt ( To the best of my memory - I could be wrong). As a 300tdi owner, and having driven around with no spill pipes at one time, I tend to disagree with Mr G - for a short trip, it will be a bit messy, but do-able.
