I would go tdi, less electronics/wires. Now that i've got one, might put a bigger radiator in.

Motors are about the only thing all Defender don't have in. They all leak, that are all slow, they are all the coolest and best 4x4 on offer.

Some will say go a Tdi as they are all mechanical. You can fix it anywhere, drive it under water virtually and it will still go. BUT if you don't know how to fix it than the point is mute. They aren't the most powerful Landy around and a bit noisy. Most have been well used, and finding a good one is a game of persistence and patience. They have there own issues, cracked heads or overheating I think can be some.

Td5's, many people have done all the same trips as a Tdi has and made it home. There are a few known issues with a Td5's but they have a known fix as well and most likely had that done anyway. Oil in the electrical loom is one I can think of. A Td5 is a bit quieter and more responsive than a Tdi.

I bought new (puma) due to circumstances. Similar to a Td5, electrics in general can be a concern but don't necessarily mean a failing. I find with electrics if they work well to start with they generally keep working. Properly earthed, insulated, and no chance of crushing or rubbing through goes a long way to reliability. Again will go the same places as a Tdi, and a step up on a Td5 on cabin quietness and responsiveness. The pumas however have a bit of a reputation for poor build quality, can't trust a hung over pom to check his hung overs mates' work I guess. So you will need to do your own build quality checking.

But if you buy a Td5 or Tdi you will be running a spanner over it anyway.

Surely the most important thing is how much do you want to pay for a defender

If you only have $15 grand then a TDI it is
If you have $20 grand to $40 grand then a Td5.

Or if you have $40 grand + burning a hole in your pocket then a Puma
