130 Defender 300tdi engine swap....
Should I or should I not....put a 4.0l Intech 6 cyl in my Landy?
Here are the fast facts:
- '95 300tdi 130 Defender, needs a little work but I LOVE it like a brother from another mother. So I'll drive it for a while yet.
- Manual trans replaced by 4spd Discovery auto...sweeeet.
- 385000km on the clock. Engine never been opened and runs well enough not to be concerned. ie. does not use oil, but gets hot and tired some times.
- In daily use and as an overland/camper/tow/school run and take the dogs to the weir vehicle.
- Overall in not too bad shape mechanically.
Righto, now I can already see some thinking I am a cook, but here are my thoughts.
I am looking for something more drivable on the open road. I have to drive the diesel hard to maintain decent speed with all the camping gear or when towing. Overtaking can be dangerous at times?! Yes, it has great low down torque and all the benefits of diesel over petrol,,, like idling submerged while bogged in the river. That was fun, especially the expression on my mates face when water started rushing up to his ankles.
It is not a diesel vs petrol debate pls, more a practical execution debate. Like what bell housing and other gear needed to make this project work.
Now gents, and maby the odd lady. Your thoughts please.
Cheers Armani

Personally I wouldn't...
However, the easiest way would probably be to use an auto box which will bolt straight up to the engine, and run the LT230 as a divorced setup.
