I was under the impression that once the main pillars are gone then they usually write the car off.. ?? Both front pillars are broken.. :(

And I really hope that his insurance covers him.. he was a gutted man (and for good reason) when I saw him yesterday..

In a normal car yes. In a land rover the B and C pillars are one bolt-in part.

AFAIK all decent insurers will cover you in a 4x4 park as long as you weren't taking part in a comp.

EDIT: However the vehicle may still be classes as an economic writeoff due to the amount of damage.
e.g.
Roof
Both pillars
doors,
rear left quarter
etc
etc...
Easily be $10k in parts (especially if bought through Landrover)

I've done my insurance through the local dealer (underwritten by Alliance) as "Land Rover Insurance" and my policy clearly state that "The policy shall include the use of the vehicle on any road that appears on an official Australian map (Hema or similar) whether sealed or unsealed."

I queried whether it was just legalese for Gazetted roads and the answer was that it’s a product designed for Land Rover and it covers all use on all known roads. The only exclusions are the normal stuff like motorsport and use in conjunction with my business or trade as I picked a private use only package.

I honestly hope he is covered and that he's able to replace the car. Unfortunately most insurance companies don't differentiate between car brands and a bent pillar is 99% of the time deemed a write off. That’s why Defenders make good buy backs if you get the chance.

All the insurers I got a quote from assured me their policies covered me anywhere I was legally allowed to be, except if participating in a competion. Despite that, I'll be double-checking my Shannon's policy.

That is repairable. All the panels bolt on, bolt off.

There is a user on here who put their defender on it's side recently, and put the worst of it back into shape with a hammer.

I am growing so attached to my Defender, I now want to fix myself in the advent of a minor accident.....

AFAIK the boys in blue only need to be informed if there was in injury other than pride.

If it was mine, I'd buy it back and convert it to a rag top. The dents add character and "bush cred".
