Non-LED headlamp upgrades at not exorbitant price discussion was recently covered on
www.defender2.net.
Take a look here, first is what I posted as my recommendation, followed by the link to the entire thread at the bottom:
First, LR do offer a upgraded H4 halogen bulb for standard headlights. The Land Rover part number code for these is VPLDV0061. They are standard 55/60W and they are described as Xenon, but there may be Xenon gas inside but in reality they remain a H4 bulb, already a big improvement in light output, and they are fully legal. Not expensive either.
Second, order a headlight loom from Landreiziger in The Netherlands which will give the full alternator produced power to the headlamps without the significant power drop of the standard wiring via the headlight switch. This loom is a great product at a very good price. Details in following thread:

Third, if you want to go a little step further, then also replace your standard headlights by a pair of the Land Rover original Wipac clear headlights. (same as the main headlamp in the SVX front). Will be an additional light output improvement, and will not really change the originality of your truck.
Those three combined come at a reasonable price, and will allow you to see in the dark.

PS - Now that I have that Landreiziger loom installed, I often am tempted to sell my Speaker EVO LEDs (which are fantastic, let's be clear about that) and go back to my original SVX Wipac lights which I have in storage together with those upgraded LR H4 bulbs... This also in the spirit of originality.
