    Snorkel discipline - it's footy sock time.

    I've been on a couple of thoroughly enjoyable trips to the Watagans recently with a few other vehicles and my confidence in Monty has grown enormously ('08 Puma 110 wagon).

    We've covered plenty of different terrain; rocks, loose gravel and dust, enormous muddy tracks and footwell-level puddles and thoroughly enjoyed every minute.

    As the odometer read 97,500km and the engine light came on the other day, I figured I'd send him in for a slightly early service so off he went to Ayres in Brookvale.

    The guys noticed that the air fitler was absolutely full of dirt...I had originally thought that recent sluggish performance was due to climbing in altitude (Blue Mountains fly fishing trip last weekend and something I notice a lot in my Austin Healey). Mark said the filter had done exactly what's it's supposed to do but remarked that there was a lot of dirt in there....and after checking the seals were all true, he noticed mud trails down the inside of the snorkel....so I guess all the dirt has accumulated in the filter from dust and from muddy water getting inside the snorkel.

    Thus, I'm going to put a football sock on my Low range/ CDL lever and anytime I engage CDL (as soon as I'm off tarmac), the sock goes over the top of the snorkel.

    Does this sound like a reasonable remedy? Will it restrict the air intake?

    Its not being off the tarmac per se that is the problem

    Its driving in the dust of other vehicles. You can't avoid that if you are in a convoy, The occasional dust from an oncoming vehicle is fine,

    a footy sock won't do anything to help

    I use a Landcruiser snorkel head , (ebay 'mushroom snorkel head' $45) they are good for the 4.5 V8 Turbo diesel so breath plenty good enough for a Defender

    As in a Donaldson pre cleaner the air spins up & the dust goes to the outside by centrifical action , in a donaldson it spins into a bowl (more efficient) but in the Toyota head it exits thru two slots in the top, (don't seal the slots up)

    It is also designed to expel water so you wont get the mud in your snorkel.

    Also Nanocom airflow tests show no difference compared to a Safari Ram head - just can't figure out why I never seen any other Defenders with them ???

    Are you sure the snorkel installation was done correctly, sealing the joint immediately inside the guard from the snorkel. If not, this could be the cause of the dirty filter and could have worse consequences if going through deep water for a prolonged period.



    On the vehicle I purchased, this joint fell apart and was unsealed. There are some pics lower on the page below and more info further on.

    I've seen that as well Erich, in cases where 4WD "specialists" have carried out a "professional" installation.

    The other question I would be reflecting on if I was relying on a dealership for servicing would be ... did they in fact they change it on earlier occasions when they should have ?

    You can buy proper snorkel socks and internal pre filters quite cheap off eBay if you don't wanna go down the cyclone path. Or simply turn the head around backwards when venturing off road.

    I might get one of these for the D4. I had bought a pre-cleaner but it was the wrong size so was returned.

    I shake my head when I see that.
    The air is no cleaner behind the snorkel head than in front.

    If you know anything about aerodynamics there is more dust behind because of the vortices involved

    Like, why is the back of your car always dustier than the front.

    Analogy -- check the tennis ball in the wind tunnel, look at the smoke buildup (DUST) behind the ball (Snorkle head) , You are sucking not just the direct stream of dust in that you would with a forward facing ram head, but you are also sucking in the disturbed turbulent air from around an inch or so either side of the head.


    True, A snorkel head is not a Tennis Ball, but the vortices behind a snorkel head are much worse.

    I turn the head of the snorkel around when I am off road sometimes. Not to stop the dust... but to stop all the leaves that come off when you brush past the tress on the side of the track ending up in the snorkle.

    Its not tennis ball, so the aero-dynamics are completely different, in case you are wondering....

    and your analogy of dust at on rear of a the vehicle is inept as there is no under current, caused by distance between the vehicle and road....

    The proof of pudding is in the eating....or it works.
