    R380 Gearbox Leak

    Hi All,

    I just wondered if someone might be able to help me out with an R380 Gearbox query.

    I have a bit of an oil leak problem which I initially thought was coming from the transfer box inspection plate. But after further inspection it appears to be higher than that.

    It looks as though it is coming from the 5th gear stop, which has several shims under it. I removed the gear and transfer and transfer lever selectors and noticed that there is gearbox oil up inside there.

    It doesn't appear to me as though it should be up that high?? should I have gearbox oil in this area? I have attached a photo of what I found.

    Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    go the attachements again...

    odds are more than likely its the intermediate gear shaft seal leaking.

    Sorry about the attachment, i'll try again.

    Thanks for the info though, I will have a look through the books and see if I can locate the seal and get one ordered and put in.

    It's more than likely that the extension shaft seal ( O-ring FRC4951) located at the other end of that shaft that leads to the gearbox selectors is the culprit, letting some of the ATF out as it sprays around in the gearbox. Also check your gearbox breather pipes - if they are blocked that could also account for oil being pushed past the o-ring. In fact do that first, it may save having to take the top of the gearbox off.

    Thanks for the reply.

    I just ordered two of those today in hopes that this will be the culprit (and to have a spare if I should damage one installing it).

    I also sent an email to Ashcroft Transmissions in the UK who kindly replied with the same response.

    However, as you have mentioned it would be a good idea to check the breather pipes first (never thought of that one), they were replaced about a year ago but you just never know!

    I have attached the photo sent from Ashcroft showing where the O'ring goes for future information should anyone else have similar issues.
