in our 06 td5 90 the ABS has been removed completely by the previous owner, perhaps you can do the same. we have never had an issue with getting RWC or passing inspections.

Thanks mate, I'll give them a call. Yeah I think he was referring to a modulator not an ecu - not that I have a clue what either of them are! Called it a "control unit" but looking online/ebay etc I see that modulators are much more expensive than ECUs. I'll give that crowd a ring tomorrow and see what they can do.
I sure felt like despairing when I put the phone down today!
If you need a good second opinion, take the vehicle to AMV in Ringwood ASAP. They are honest guys who will tell you the issue(s) and the options. Mention you were refered from AULRO as they have picked up business from here before.
Importantly, they can supply new or second hand parts and also accept customers bringing their own parts in. This helps if you want to shop ebay first before committing to the actual repairs. Well that's been my experience anyway.
Hoo-Roo, Dave.
There is a modulator bypass solution, there are links on here somewhere. Disco Td5s you can buy a repair kit. Apparently for a Defender there is no Kit???
Mine comes on intermittently, Buy a Nanocom or similar and you will be able to reset yourself.
Mine comes on intermittently and I just reset and ABS works again for a while.
I do need to pull out the modulator and either see if I can repair it or do the bypass. From what I understand the plungers in it can be the issue. Can be from not changing brake fluid often enough as well causing deterioration of the plunger rubber.
Be careful not running ABS, I had my light illuminated last week going to the airport in rainy conditions and with a heavy Defender locked the right hand tyre and had to pulse brake when the traffic went from 100kmph to 40kmph in less than 100metre (Damn Rowley Road exit of Kwinana Fwy, issues there every morning). I made sure I reset it before coming home last night from the airport.
One hint is the Wabco reset seems to require the car to be running, not moving. The normal engine fault reset requires the car to have the ignition one, enegine not running.
The new Nanocom diagnostic tool is about $500 I think and LR resets are a bout $50 each time.
I can not believe there is not a Wabco rebuild kit for the TD5 Defender but there is for the Disco. I have been trying to determine weather the Disco one is useable, but do not have a definitive problem. This seems to be a very common problem with the WABCO modulators.
Hope this helps

There is a kit avail for rebuilding early p38 (95-99, I think) wabco abs too. The boys at hardrange.com sell it for the guy who puts them together.
