    engine oil type

Can any 2.4l defender owners tell me what brand and name of engine oil you are using. I am getting lost with all the names and numbers and recommendations. Thanks.

    oils aint oils

    Shell Rimula in the winter
    Sometimes Rimula in the summer.

Will try something a bit thicker this summer. If I could get the old BP Corse would consider it if approved for diesels. Lovely thick stuff

Used this in my old series 3 with very good results.

I run mobil 1 in my 130 puma, which is a real pain as I always run caltex delo 400 in all of my earthmoving gear and trucks and as such buy it in 44 gallon drums, would be good to run one oil..

first of all.....decide on which brand of oil you like........
eg......my favourite is penrite......so i use that in all my cars.......

then go to their website......and look under their recommendations which grade of oil is recommended for your particular motor......
the site should also list what to use for the gearboxes and diffs etc.....and also the capacities for each.......

you can print this info page out and keep it for future reference......then you will know exactly which oil......and how many litres of it to buy for the whole vehicle......

I have looked at the Castrol,Shell ,Nulon and Penrite websites.Castrol recommend Edge Professional but can can you buy that easily and is it the replacement for SLX Professional Powerflow which my dealer uses. Shell has not got the 2.4l listed so I called them and they recommended Helix Ultra Extra. Nulon says contact dealer,I will contact Nulon tomorrow to find out more. Penrite says Enviro +. This oil meets the Ford spec of wss-m2c-934b which is probally for the vehicles with a DPF which mine does not have,so the spec is wsscmsc913b,or does'nt it matter if I use the 934 spec oil. I am sure there are others who have gone though this exercise.

I use Nulon in my Puma and have done for the last 12 months. I made the change because you can get it anywhere and I am happy with the results. It used to be listed on the Nulon site as recommended for the Puma when I first used it but that has since changed. It is still listed for the Transit though I think.

I use this site for all my oils, not much use to you in OZ but it does list the Ford specific approved oils conforming to WSS-M2C 913-A

    Ford Engine Oil - WSS-M2C 913-A - Motor Oil

Finally got my oil selection. After a long discussion with the castrol help desk,it appears castrol and some other oil companies have got the wrong info about the Defenders from their info suppliers. They were told our 2.4l defenders needed an oil that suited DPFs(wss m2c 935b) which the 2.4l dont seem to have.So the Castrol oil to suit the 2.4l (wss m2c 913b) is Magnatec Professional A5 5w-30 which P38ace informed us about some time ago. I think castrol said it was up to the D spec now.

After looking around and calling a few of the oil manufactures I could not find anyone who could supply an oil which specifically met the required standard. Most of them wouldn't go any further than say that their oil is what they recommend for the motor. If I remember correctly the only exception was Castrol Magnatec, but I had issues finding someone to order it in for me.

In the interest of keeping my warranty I ended up purchasing 'Ford' oil through a Ford dealership. It was spelt out on the front that it specifically met the required standard. I could also get it in what ever size I liked and was relatively well priced.
