    under bonnet insulation puma

    Hi All,

Has any one put any sort of under bonnet insulation on a Puma. I have been trying to work out why the factory never did. $10 cost saving or for some other reason like heat dissapation???

I've got some 25mm closed cell foam with foil front I'd like to use just a bit unsure.

My aim is to cut a bit of noise.

    Cheers

Check the heat rating before you install it. Some EVA products (closed cell foam) with the foil backing only has a 100 deg C heat rating. You would expect the area over the turbo to be hotter than 100 deg C or if not that high, certainly it may degrade the EVA foam over time. You could add a layer of heat insulation rated to 500 deg C which will provide a heat barrier to the foam. You can buy heat insulation in 140 x 90 cm sheets on Ebay for about $75. Might need 2 for a bonnet.

The other thing to consider is reverberation. The EVA foam won't necessarily stop reverb of the thin alu bonnet. Consider a layer of butyl/foil like Dynamat (Jaycar has an equivalent cheaper) or a PVC/barium layer to add density to the bonnet.

I'm in the process of doing the same. I recently did the cabin. The transmission tunnel and seat boxes are a big amplifier into the cabin. Made a huge difference laying a butyl/foam/foil barrier. Posted a project. http://www.aulro.com/afvb/projects-t...-defender.html

Thanks MLD I was beginning to think I was the only one with this crazy idea. Thanks for the warning about the heat, I would not have thought it would be that hot around there.

    Thanks again

I installed appropriately heat rated insulation under the bonnet of my 2.4 Puma and the gains for the price ($200) were not worth it for me. I had much better results installing an engine blanket the same as what comes now comes withthe 2.2 Puma. If yours is a 2.2 than you may appreciate the gains from extra bonnet insulation but if its one or the other, go for the blanket.
