Controller Area Network. Old technology now. Basically each module is connected to a phone line connected to each individual module so messages can be transmitted to one another.
For example an ABS module may calculate the vehicle speed from the wheel speed sensors and instead of connecting individual wires to the engine, instrument cluster and trasmission computers to put the speed output on, its put on the bus (two wires) and the computers that require that info take it and use it along with all other information being passed on the bus.
Saves alot in wiring and weight. Not so easy to diagnose as one module going down can pull everything down with it.
