    Annoying Problems

    I've had the 110 Puma from new for over a year now and love it. Its never let me down but I am annoyed by minor re-occuring problems:

    Loose door handles - the exterior door handle comes loose over time. Started with the drivers door (most frequently used) then the front passenger, now the R rear. I get them fixed under warranty but now the driver door handle is becoming loose again. Is there any permanent fix? A far as I know the dealer re-tightens the screws and applies thread lock.

    Opening seam between roof and RH front column - the seam between the roof and the windscreen frame opened up after a trip to Sundown NP. I assumed the rough tracks contirbuted. Got fixed under warranty - has happened again after a recent trip out west. Anyone else experineced this problem?

    Top snorkell mount - the truck came with a dealer fitted genuine LR raised air intake - the top mount was fixed by self tappers to the front RH column. This inevitably came loose (again after Sundown) - I had TJM refix it using nut inserts at my own cost (didn't know if LR would do it properly) Again anyone else had this problem - better to check it out before your snorkell is flapping in the breeze!

    Any feedback or comment welcome.

    I fitted my own snorkel (Mantec Plastic Jobie) using the same method and have not had any problems.

    Did they use the correct size drill bit?

    In much the same boat as you,door handles you have to get them to really use a strong loctite, the roof thing needs a modified bolt/screw, but mine turned into a nightmare when the dealer stuffed up the roof lining(Putting it back together). I have done extensive trips in mine (covering 60,000k in one year from new)in most mainland outback tracks, you probably have the clutch and transfer case lever to look forward to.Oh and the water pooling in the left hand footwall is either the wiper blank grommets or the drain valve in the left hand gaurd!

    I had one of the first pumas, a 110 08 model, sold it earlier this year with 150,000km on it, most of the km were hard outback or serious 4wd miles, I had the snorkel issue due to the dealers using the wrong drill size, and I ended up fixing the loose door handle issue with a lock nut and loctite. As the defenders are a big mecano set, I also went over every nut and bolt on the body after about 60,000km, it fixed all of the little rattles. The 110 never let me down, and was an awesome off road weapon and remote touring rig.

    This is good to hear, I'm an '08 110 owner too. My only issues have been leaking and some basic wiring issues from lots of off-road work. No door handle problems yet but I'll keep an eye out for them.

    I do have an issue with the rear door windows sliding themselves down half an inch when I'm off-road but it's become habit to check these regularly.

    The rear windows sliding down by themselves seems to be a common problem - I accept that as a just a Defender feature. Just make sure they're fully up when you wash the car!

    wow I have many of those thong as well. Round two for door handles. Funny, I thought it was the kids half pulling them off when the climb up onto the step treads, but they came loose on a recent trip.
    Mine hasn't leaked for a while, but after constant whacking of trees on the A pillar I know have a hair line gap between the roof and pillar, and yes a leak. Thats the hay river track for you.
    My snorkel doesn't come loose, but I have some sticky sealer thread lock type stuff there from the dealer.
    I have had the central locking wiring on both rear doors come adrift as well. I could open the car when it was locked, but the alarm did go off.
    My rear windows self lower 10mm, I got them to move the winders to the 6 o'clock position when full up and it seems to have fixed it.

    I must admit, I did leaver the dealer a bit flat this time. I asked them to tighten the low range lever or have a look at it as it has jumped out of gear a few times. They said they found metal bits in the transfer case and think it best if it was replaced. Under warranty, but I have started to think if I can afford to keep this thing after warranty. I does seem a constant trickle of dumb stuff that goes wrong with them.

    In saying this however if the dealer trashes something trying to fix something just politely bring it up when you pick it up or shortly afterwards. I never seem to look over the car till I get home, but I take pics with the phone and send them on if something is a miss. My floor got replaced because the dealer ripped it. Don't know who paid but don't care either. I just told them I am quite proud of this car and though it's doesn't cost as much as a RR, it's costing me enough as is. They could see my point.

    On my 110 you can fix this problem by resetting position of the handle so that the weight of the handle is closing the window rather than opening it when wound fully up. Landrovers are not the only vehicle I have struck this on, I think it is mainly a case of the sort of road you drive on!
