    Wobbly Starter Solenoid Stud and Mystery Spade

    After sticking my starter to always on, dropping the ignition feed so it wouldn't start and a few episodes of shorting sparks I decided I better sort out my starter solenoid issues once and for.... some considerable time .

    The main problem is that the live wire connection stud wobbles about and will not screw in tight. The second problem is the ignition spade does not go on tight. And the third is that there is a loose spade connection floating around the starter and exhaust manifold (partially melted)

    The stud:
    Attached a picture of the stud, the amount it can be pulled out is the space shown between the nut and the solenoid, you can see come blue loctite on thread. The nut it seized or locked on.
    Does any one know how this stud is attached inside the solenoid? If it wobbles and has in and out play of a few cm's will it be loosing contact inside? Is it likely the stud has snapped or thread stripped? Can I glue it or thread lock it?

    The loose trigger wire: Difficult to fit round the back unless very small hand so reluctant to take it off and squish it with pliers to make tighter, because I'm likely to over squish and not get it back on. Length of wire is tight and only just gets over the pin so cutting it and putting a might shorten it too much. Is there an electrically conductive glue I can use or a better idea?


    The spade connector without a home: Attached a pic of the loose spade, it comes out off the loom that runs along the back of the engine that contains the two twin brown wires that attach to the starter pin. This is a disco 200tdi in a LR90 2.5 Turbo Diesel.. so not sure if this part of loom is 2.5TD or 200tdi. Any ideas what it would have been for?

    maybe they used the same loom on a V8 as the diesel, as the V8 has a wire to the coil from the starter solonoid which provides 12 volts to the coil for starting, then reverts to a resistor wire when running.

    If the stud/bolt is loose I suspect it has got hot at some stage( over use of startermotor) and melted the plastic houseing around it. Whatever is the problem though you WILL have to pull it and fix. Potential for a roadside FTP or a fire if left to its own devices.

    Not sure if the starter is supposed to have a heat shield.. mine does not - so you may be right about melting.

    roadside FTP? whats that then?

    Is it possible to remove the solenoid without removing the whole starter motor on disco 200tdi engine? It looks to me as if the feed wire from solenoid to starter motor is not detachable.. ... Its a tight fit and I cant see all the bolts *sigh*.. suppose I better try and get the whole thing out and fix properly.

    Dought it has a heat shield, a deefer 300Tdi does not. The melting,if that is what has ocurred, is more likely as a result of the S/motor being used continually for some reason . FTP, Failing To Proceed!!!

    I just kept thinking 'File Transfer Protocol' haha I need to spend less time infront of computers
