			Finding or fixing a/c thermoamp.

While I'm pestering the forum about my starter issues, I might as well add this one to the mix

Our standard Australian Defender a/c's been underperforming for some time and eventually karked it early this year. The guys at AMV reckoned the thermoamp was stuffed, but couldn't find a replacement part themselves, so it's currently not working still....

I've had a peek at the thermoamp in the battery box while running the car and while you can certainly hear a 'click' from it when you turn the a/c dial to cooler it isn't followed by the load on the compressor. So are they right that the thermoamp is stuffed? And if so, how on earth does one get a hold of one? Ebay and internet searches are turning up nothing...

 Thanks again.

[1] If you can hear a click, it's probably working. Check for loose connections.

Mine stopped working in the Kimberley during the build up. I pulled it out and pried the box open, the power (+'ve) pin had a dry solder joint and had heated up, as a result the pin had arced and burnt out the plug. I cut the plug and soldered wires with spade terminals to each pin (after resoldering the circuit board dry solder joint). I then rejoined it to the loom and it worked fine. I also found loose connctions on the power supply solenoid, which also contributed to intermittent performance. I've now relocated all the A/C electrics to an under cubby safe for easier access.

[2] The Thermo-amp box is not available, but a simpler aftermarket version is. Call Keith at KSR Auto Air in Bayswater on 9762 1011. I spoke to him a while ago and he was going to order a couple in to have in stock, I intend to buy one when I get around there to replace and simplify my AC wiring. At the time of inquiring, pricing was anticipated at the $50 mark.
