    Fitting a winch

    Does anyone know the best source for standard height uprated springs? Fitting a winch and don't want to raise the ride height. Kinda like the ride as is, does putting a which on upset it that much?

    First, it always helps to know what vehicle you are referring to but I will through my two bobs worth in blind.

    If you already have a winch bar then it weighs a lot more that the winch, I would be inclined to fit the winch and see first because it may not make much difference.

    Before you do, measure the distance from the wheel arch to the bottom of the wheel rim taking a centre line across the rim, ie make sure the tape runs past the centre of the wheel. The reason you measure to the bottom of the rim is because that measurement is a constant and is not effected by tyre pressure or tread wear so it is the only datum point that gives a true indication over the life of the vehicle.

    When you have fitted the winch measure again, if it has lowered the front a noticeable amount you can get heavier coils from the likes of TJM, I say that because I used to work at a TJM store and I know their coils come in options of standard height, standard height with extra load specifically bull bar and winch as well as increased height.

    Be aware though that standard height may still be a little different to what you have. It doesn't always come out exactly to a certain spec.

    Can't remember the part number off hand but Heavy Duty 110 front springs are the same as Standard 90 rears...

    I'll see if I can find the part numbers.

    On my 2000 defender extreme, I had land rover put on heavier front springs at the time of installing a bull bar and winch. Maintained road height and drive style. Was very happy.

    Sorry for the lack of specifics, it's a TD5 90, the winch bar isn't a full on bullbar like the ARB ones so won't be as heavy, think it will be a case of fit it and see, if the winch starts carving grooves in the road when I slow down for traffic lights I'll source some HD springs , will hhave a look at the TJM ones, thanks Landy110

    personally Id just measure the distance between the rubber bumpstop and the pad welded to the top of the axle housing.....these dont change shape like the wheel arches do...

    just looking at some old spring specs from LR:

    110 front = 155 lb
    90 front = 175 lb
    110 HD front = 225 lb

    I currently run 210lb custom kings in my 110 tdi, it has a custom tube bar and a 9000lb hyd winch (which would weigh much the same as an electric)

    I persoanlly want to go softer in the front. I have been told shock valving is also very important and need to look into that more.
