Thread: Sound and heat insulation

I started a few months ago with installing sound and heat proofing.

What I did:

1. Dynamat throughout the vehicle, including doors, roof, inside of seating box and 2 layers against firewall and floor panels
2. 8mm Thermatec insulation material
3. Marine carpet on top of everything.
4. New head liner boards

Results:
Took her up to Stockton beach and the day was probably around 30 degrees so nice and warm. My observations:
1. Can't hear all the non-engine noises anymore
2. The 300Tdi engine is more of a low-level rumble than sounding like it's about to take off
3. With the windows closed I can now clearly hear what the kids are saying in the back seat (has it's pro's and cons)
4. Radio volume used to be around 27, now in the upper teens around 19
5. Overall just seems more "solid" and a bit more like a car and not a truck


It cost quite a bit of money and took a very long time to do (maybe becaue I'm a bit of a perfectionist) but well worth it.

The other big plus is the heat reduction. Sitting inside the vehicle on the dunes without aircon (that's the next project) it never seemd intolerable as was the case previously. The heat coming from the engine/gearbox through the gearbox tunnel is completely gone so very comfortable. Handbrake not hot at all so I think an aircon will now be much more effective.

Obviously seeing as the dash was out I wired up switches and installed a Mud Console and Pod with lots of goodies (includnig electric windows front and rear and central locking) so that's a plus.

Would I recommend it? If you have a family with young kids and planning to do some big trips, then most definitely. From my own perspective, it just makes me want to spend more time in the car.

I am half way through a similar project. I have so far just done a single layer of Dynamat, bulk head to cargo area on my 110 Puma. I would like to say the improvement in sound reduction has be dramatic. I intend to do the roof and the doors etc as you have done, however the freight on the EVA foam to my location was to much. I will pick up when in the city. I have also observed with only selected area's completed with just Dymamat there is also a reduction in heat transmission. Looking forward to Dynamat everything with foam over the top. I am also considering the Puma Wright Offroad mat set, it looks in keeping with the car. Yes the aircon is working more effectively
