    With regards to dot ratings, you can put higher in older vehicles, but shouldn't use dot3 in ABS or later vehicles that specify dot4. One exception is I believe 100/200 series cruisers with ABS, apparently dot 3 non synthetic should be used ? or it will cause problems?. (Not that we care on AULRO about what brake fluid to put in those...) There is also a' super dot3', this IIRC can be used in early D1 and RRC ABS systems OK. I just use Dot4 in everything now.
