    Grumbling in 6th gear

    Can anyone help me with a grumbling noise in 6th gear under load it happens at around 115kph, when I take the load of it goes away?
    Only in 6th, 5th at the same speed is ok.
    It sort of sends a shuttering noise through the cab.

    I didn’t notice it before I fixed the vibration issues it had with the front tail shaft , but since its running so smooth now it’s quite evident .

    The truck has 85k on it.

    what about when your in 5th at the same RPM as when it happens in 6th

    I'd be draining the gearbox oil and looking at the colour, and checking the plug magnet for more than normal amount of silver paste.

    5th is all good at the same rpm, I just had the oil don on the gearbox .

    How much is a normal amount of paste ?

    There shouldn't be any paste at all if the gearbox is in good nick. I just changed the oil in my 2007 110 with 85000km on the clock (20 000km on the oil), nil paste. If paste is present, something is starting to wear, it's a guessing game to how long it will last before failure. I would be doing oil change again soon and checking for paste and/or chips. Noises hardly ever get better by leaving it

    So today I fitted a set of cranked rear radial arms, Once again a simple job, less than 20min.



    Push in bearings
    Undo 3 nuts on rubber mount chassis side
    Undo 1 nut on diff side
    Bolt the new ones in.

    While I was crawling around under there, I took a chance to check the torque settings on the prop shafts they were all good. While I was doing this I noticed that the rear prop shaft had some drag on it from the hand brake, so I grabbed a spanner and backed it off until it ran free.
    Now I don’t know if it was the cranked radial arms or the hand brake adjustment but on the drive home this afternoon the grumbling and shudder is now gone.

    I’m for the hand brake drag being the problem.

    Do keep in mind that it was in at Land Rover a few weeks back having the service bulletin performed in the hand brake. I guess they didn’t adjust it correctly.
