    Hot connection Air con circuit

    Hi all. The fan on my air con stopped working the other day on my 93 Defender.
    Anyway, the positive feed for it comes straight from the battery so I got in and had a look and sure enough poking around in the wiring it started up. I noticed the cable from the battery which has an inline fuse was extremely hot so I pulled the fuse out and it hot as too and the end of the glass fuse came off in my hand. I figured the fuse must have just gotten old so replaced it but still getting very hot. It's a fairly HD inline fuse on fairly substantial cable. One of the old type bakelite, screw up, spring tension jobs.

    I am going to replace the inline fuse for something better tomorrow but could it be likely there's a bad connection somewhere else? The inline fuse cable feeds into a relay and the relay itself and the wiring going from the relay to the air con seems cool and normal?

    firstly; redo all the connections - where crimped they can fray due to vibration and movement - which will consequently increase resistance....

    &

    secondly; plan to rewire with appropriate size & fuse protected wire and a relay


    depending on the use environment, the deterioration of 20 year old wiring can be faster than you think

    Fuses are not supposed to get hot. Replace the old 3AG bakelite fuse and holder with a suitably rated blade type fuse and holder. If you're real keen replace the whole cable from battery to relay including fuse and holder. If you don't have the tools/expertise just remove the old cable and fuse assembly and get your local auto elec to manafacture a new one.

    This exact thing happened to me last year. The wires were stuffed, broken and corroded. Lots of the connectors needed replacing, esp the ones that connected directly to the motor. Also, the motor itself may need replacing.

    I ended up replacing the whole loom (for everything) but I'm yet to make the A/C loom.
