			Removing centre muffler

I'm thinking about ****ing off the centre muffler on my 300tdi it's got the usual pump mods and goes well how much of a diffrance does takeing out the muffler make ie performance egt and noise ? Is it worth it. Not hat it's a expensive mod

When I put a Long range tank in the 90 I had to take out the back box. Made it sound more throaty but also seem to give it a bit more mid range grunt.

Everyone says it makes a difference but I reckon it's a placebo effect (if it's louder it's faster, right ?)

Why don't I think it does anything ?

It's a straight through, perforated tube, glass pack muffler.

If you drop the dump pipe off the turbo it has a huge mig bead all the way around the inside, (seemingly) restricting flow.

I ground that out so it was all nice and smooth and couldn't measure a difference on my test hills either (all prior to upping the fueling)

A 2.5", 2.75" or 3" pipe does make a (small) difference, and you'll see slightly lower EGT's by around 20-25* peak.

The 3" pipe definitely allowed a greater rev range through the gears on the 130. 3rd went from peaking at around 75km/h to easily passing 90km/h and still accelerating uphill, so the reduction in backpressure makes a fair old difference at high revs.

			 done that done that

my original 1994 centre muffler developed a fatigue crack so did a cut and shut with a hotdog. $120.00 fitted and welded. With hindsight would just put in a straight length of pipe and leave the hotdog out.

Can't tell the difference on noise but my calibrated hill test track results indicate it will hold a gear longer and definitely nicer to drive. Floor still gets pretty hot though. Will eventually do something about that making a heat shield or similar.
