So after 20 years on the beaches the firewall in my 300tdi isn't looking too crash hot. Usual rot in the corner of the firewall. I expect it to be much worse than it looks and may be a little past the point of one of those repair panels you see floating about.
The plan at the moment is to source a new/second hand bulkhead which I can repair/paint and swap into the car over a weekend (not a job I am looking forward to).
I have been looking about on the net for a couple of months now and have not managed to find one. Also I have no idea what the going rate is. I would appreciate contributions from anyone who has done this job and managed to source one.

I have recently repaired the footwell area in mine. Agree that it is usually worse in the inside as the thing is made from two laminates with no corrosion prevention between them. mindboggling!!!
I would look at getting a galvanised one from the UK given the time it is going to take you to swap it over. only want to do that once.

Having removed and replaced my bulkhead for a newie I would suggest getting the old one out prior to getting a replacement, mine had some good rot but had I not already had a replacement I would certainly have had a bash with the grinder and welder, with some plate and the panels available it could be a fairly good job.

Are you sure the bulkhead is that rusty
There are plenty of companies that do repair panels for the bulkhead. Believe me rusty bulkheads are a very common problem in the uk but replacing the whole bulkhead is not that common. A bit of beach driving has nothing on salt on the roads at winter time
You can get replacement footwell to tops and sides.
Because believe me unless you have a fully made up , ie with all the bits already on with dash, heaters , and all the other bits . Ready to go it will take you a lot longer than a weekend to swap a bulkhead over. Not as easy a job as you are making out.

Yeah getting all the crap apart on your own three days, and putting it back on ya own a week (suggesting you have not done it before) then a day to remember where the extra bolts come from lol

It took me two days to get out the main firewall / chassis bolts.
The benefit of doing a firewall replacement is it gets you in where you can see and solve any problems. (I ended up replacing my whole wiring loom).
You can repare rust easily enough, however for me it is a part of a larger restoration and I do not have to worry about it in the future.
