Has my Defender been chipped ?

I was just wondering if there was any way of telling if my Defender 2.4L puma has been chipped or remapped by the previous owner.

The reason I ask is, I have read that they have a maximum speed of 145kph , I in a private road of cores have hit 155kph and she still had legs . I was playing with a new land cruiser L70 series with the V8 diesel , although he told me from a standstill he had me no problems , once on a roll and 3rd gear he said he had to work the cruiser harder .

I know it has 430Nm and weighs almost 2.4 tons , this may be the reason . The defender was all over it once we moved off , Uphill in 6th gear he had no hope of catching me .

It seem to pull from the lights and push you in the seat and I don’t rev it past 3500rpm, which brings me to the next question what is the rev limit on the puma 2.4 engine ?

It certainly sounds like it has had some kind of performance upgrade.
If the speed limiter has been removed and it pulls strongly uphill in 6th I'd say it has had the ECU remapped.
Another common mod with an ECU remap is to disable the EGR. To confirm this, listen carefully to the engine immediately after shut down. If standard, you will hear a "chucka chucka chucka" sound as the EGR goes through it's self cleaning cycle. If you hear no sound at all, chances are that the EGR has been disabled as part of the ECU upgrade.

Either way, enjoy the extra oomph!

If your speedo error is the same as most Defenders with standard size tyres, ie about 10% optimistic, then your indicated 155kph is about 140kph.

Unless the later models have more accurate speedos than the 300Tdi.

Mine caks out @ 132kms (ish). I found out by accident about a year after
I bought it. Very, very aware of the limiter now.

I havent noticed the EGR on shut down , but il take more notice tomorrow. The speed was taken from my GPS as I have 265/75R-16's on mine.

Just to confirm today I tried a 40kmph to 110kph in 6th today it dug deep until around 75kph but then picked up its skirt and legged it .

Just as you come off the Wisemans Ferry heading towards Sydney if anyone knows that part its full of steep 25kph to 35kph corners 3rd gear all the way with heaps of pull could even go into 4th but may be pussing it.

It’ll climb the Mooney Moony bridge hill heading to Sydney in 6th sitting on 110kph comfy and I’m able to overtake uphill winding it up to 130kph no probs . So it must have something done to it.

I just removed the cat and center muffler so this may also be helping, it hasn’t done a great deal as it was always very pokey since I bought it .
