    smoke on start up

My defender 300tdi diesel smokes on start up, every time it starts, hot or cold, it doesn't smoke when running. I'd call it white smoke. What should i be checking...cheers.

First check very carefully that it isn't actually black smoke. If it is black, then that is what it is supposed to do.

Other colours are a bit more of a worry.

White smoke is I think usually water. Was with my diesel Delica. Gray smoke is oil or just a bit to much fuel. Black smoke is to much fuel. Any other colour and it`s time to give up the party drugs.

    black smoke is normal...

its to do with the governor.

    very very basically

when the engine is stationary there is no resistance to the full fuel spring so the engine gets full fuel for start up, theres no dynamic advance wound in so injection is happening later than normal for the first couple of firings.. as the engine speeds up the governor flyweights take over and bring everything back to idle (or whatever engine RPM is being requested by the throttle input)

thanks for replys, just bought it and really don't need head problems. Got a disco 2 thats had the top end rebuilt and that really did not impress SWMBO. Divorce material. Another explanation on a diferent forum...
It's a mechanical controlled injection pump that is at min fuel-delivery during start up. As the starter motor brings the engine only to a speed that is below normal idle the fuel quantitiy is too high during the first revs (or in other words, it's not enough air for the injected fuel). This results in black smoke...
My 4bd1 normally asperated diesel only blows smoke when being pushed real hard so was a wee bit worried...thanx for replys and saving the marriage

    Cool

should be a nice puff of black smoke on start up if white smoke comes out for first 100yrds or so the fuel pump has a diagram that gets stuck and it means recon fuel pump about $1200

    Black smoke is incomplete combustion
And white smoke is no combustion at all.

Have a look at this, some good simple explanations.
Diesel Smoke tells YOU a Story…

and black smoke is entirely normal at startup for a Tdi, they all do it, as Dave explains above.
