    Hand Brake warning lamp

    The other day the hand/brake warning light came on in my defender TD5.
    after checking that the brakes weren't actually on, i made it home where i havent moved it.
    i have checked the switch on the lever, also at the brake itself,fluid level and had a look on the nanocom. i thought that it wouldn't be connected through the ECU however you can test the warning lamp by turning it on and off ( not off for me)
    can anyone tell me what else the warning lamp it activated by? low brake pads?

    i did see some faults in the ABS but i'm sure sure whether they are related.
    07-07 Rear left inlet valve short to inter 7 times
    11-05 Shuttle valve switch electrical fail ( TC and ABS lights have been stuck on for some time now and i'm told would most likely be a new ABS modulator? does a shuttle valve bleed work?)

    Recently it has also developed a whining noise when i accelerate hard and under load - generally over 2000 revs and in most gears. and seems to be leaking more oil than usual - i havent tracked the source down yet .

    sounds like the fan belt but it can't be. suggestions on this would be greatly appreciated.

    exhaust manifold leak would be my guess....
    plenty of discussion on it here.

    It sounds as if you have a dodgy engine/gearbox mount that is allowing the assembly to move and rub against some thing. Check exhaust mounts/ bolts too. Or it could be a turbo pipe leaking. Seek and ye shall find!

    Also check that your catalytic converter is okay. If it is stuff it may be restricting exhaust gas flow which will in turn create problems at the manifolds and turbo.

    Low brake fluid level in the master cyl will turn the handbrake light on, check that the float switch in the cap actually works. If the fluid level is OK unplug a lead off the cap to check for a jammed or faulty float switch & if thats the prob the light will go out
    ( Also Make sure Handbrake lever is fully off & juggle it about a bit)

    If your leaking oil then take the engine cover & turbo cover off & put them on the nature strip for hard garbage collection & give rthe engine a complete degrease & pressure clean, then you will see where the oil is leaking from, The oil has nothing to do with the noise & probly something simple like a front cam cover seal/o-ring.

    I had a noise exactly like that the other day and it turned out to be a lost pipe locator I had under the back seat that had turned itself on & yes it had me guessing for a while especially when the thing started & stopped squelling when I opened & shut any door.

    how do i check low level in master cylinder? the reservoir seems full.
    ive already ditched the acoustic cover , but not sure about the turbo heat cover. but about to remove it and have just degreased it. what is the front cam over seal? is that the rubber cylindrical cap that sits on the front of the block above the fan. and is this hard to replace?
    spoke to a mechanic today who suggested the whining sounds like and exhaust manifold leak so thats the next step.

    In my old 110 td5, the light would come on when climbing or descending steep inclines. I presume the sensor didn't like the angle. Interestingly doesn't happen with the 90.

    Hi my hand brake light on my td5 comes on often ,just push the hand brake down a bit and it will go off, its just the rubber boot lifting it onto the switch, regards .

    Just my experiences, but it seems my '02 110 has been fairly fiddled with before we got her.

    If you smash the switch on the handbrake lever into little pieces, the light will stay on all the time (!).

    But, before that, I had what I suspect to be an ABS fault, probably with one or more of the wheel sensors. I had taken all wheels off to do something (can't remember now), and after putting them all back on, the handbrake light would come on sporadically, getting worse with time. I then started having the ABS engage during normal braking (actually INCREASES braking distance when it's not required- scary stuff at times, as you push harder and harder on the pedal trying to fight it releasing the brakes for you).

    A simple disconnect of the ABS system fixed the ABS, but I believe doing this also keeps the handbrake light on - at least it did for me.

    Well thats interesting to hear from other TD5 owners. yes mine is an '02 .
    my abs light came on after a trip and has stayed on since. says theres a shuttle valve fault.
    i suspected that if the switch was broken or disconnected the handbrake light would stay on . is there a fuse that can be removed for the hand brake light?
