Visor - what do you think

Go for it Towe, You won't be disappointed. I have had one on my County for nearly 20 years (looks like the same mesh type one) and it works well. Very little extra wind noise and the benefit of extra shade is worth it. Even though it is made of mesh the angle of the stots in the mesh ensure the sun doesn't shine through unless you are going away from it. You don't need it then anyway. Also the mesh type ones don't have as much wind resistance as the solid type ones that we all had back in the 60's and 70's. Pricewise I am pretty sure I paid around $160 back then but it has been worth every cent. The mesh and all brackets are stainless so no corrosion or stains.:):)

I have one on my 2001 130, LOVE IT! Was on Grace when we brought her and I was all for removing it, felt like I was driving in a tunnel, but after driving around for a few weeks I decided to leave it on her. The difference between driving Grace and driving all the ADF landys all those years is incredible. I use to get massive headaches from constant squinting due to the glare, but now.......nothing.
PLUS I am of the opinion that Grace is nowhere as hot in the front seats on a hot stinking summers day like them ADF joby's. In fact the well known poor aircon in defender's seems to be able to cope a lot better (still not brilliant, but better).

So the question now is...does it look ugly. Well yes an no sorta, at first I was like "WTF, OMG, what did they do", now tho, don't even take any notice of the visor.

PS: Oh its 04:20am and I'm off to work soon, so no piccy's for now of Grace, but will take some when I get home after the morning shift, around 10:00am WA time.

Can't find the photo of mine ATM from when it was bought, but it shows a solid one fitted.

These, initially the solid type, were commonplace in the fifties, sixties and even into the seventies, along with louvre shades on the inside of the rear window when these started to slope (many cars had holland blinds on the back window when these were vertical or near vertical). As speeds increased, the expanded steel (or aluminium) ones became popular, as the solid ones in particular increase aerodynamic drag substantially. The general use of airconditioning in the eighties, the increasing concern about fuel consumption (from 1973, initially), and the increasing slope of windscreens (that made them impractical), and the popularity of window tinting, plus quieter cars making the added wind noise more a concern, meant that by about 1990 they had just about disappeared.

Most of these objections do not apply to the Defender, but on the other hand, the near vertical glass means they do not make as big an improvement.

I had a visor on the 109 during my travels around the northern lump during the mid 70's, I had taken to wearing shorts instead of the double kneed long trousers and the shade was great for my exposed knees.

I went a step further after loosing a couple of windscreen glasses in quick succession around Central Aus and fitted some bird mesh around the visor, then down onto a strap that was tek screwed onto each side of the window frame just above the bonnet.

One time near Whitnoom it had copped a beauty, a large rock came out of between the back tyres of a truck going the other way, fair in front of my face, the wire was pushed back to the glass which didn't break, if that stone guard hadn't been there I might not be here either.

So I say, be nice to your knee's,
get a visor fitted you will be pleased.

I'd like one for mine but often walk over the bonnet and climb over the windscreen to get to my RTT.

You can still do that Mark. Even an old fart like me still does that.:D:D

And a small vid of our last trip to Peel Lake. We were bumbling along the track when 4 emu's suddenly burst out onto the track in front of us. The wife grabbed this bit of video as I followed them down the track aways. Don't worry, I didn't speed up an run them down, I let them run at there own pace and slowed when they did till they left the track. My granddaughter was tickled pink by it all. You can see the sun visor every now an then, but in the cab its rather shady and its around 10:00am. :)
