only similar thing Ive had was in my 63 cooper S (running a late 90's 1360cc engine) was the Throw out bearing made a knocking noise when it was stuffed. . .
doubt it but just my 2C
Hi,
I have this knocking noise coming from my 2009 Defender 110, I originally thought it was coming from the engine and was getting concerned as the warranty run out a couple of months ago, I can hear it at idle and low revs, but I realised the other day the noise goes away when the clutch is pedal is depressed.
I had my clutch replaced at around 60k for noisy springs, and I know that the clutch springs are noisy again as I have been hearing it for a while, and became more noticeable crossing the Simpson in first and second gear!! But with it being out of warranty now I am up for the cost of replacing it so have put it off.
So questions are, could the clutch be causing this knocking noise I hear at idle and low revs?
And now I have to pay for a new clutch is there a better after market replacement than the LR crappy revisions to the one in there?
If I am going to have to spend money getting a new clutch then I do not want to pay for the rubbish one LR put in.
Any idea?
thanks
Pat.

Hi Pat , is the Ford Transit clutch the same ,as the Land Rover, the Ford clutchs seem to be ok ...jimr1..
If you have told them about the fault during the warranty period then I think they are obligated to fix even after the warranty expires. They did on my ignition lock.
Defenders can make significant noises and still keep going for years. I know what its like listenening for new problems, But now that you are paying for the fixes, I would be waiting till it really breaks at least you will then know exactly what caused it.
Does sound like a noisey clutch though, I think the only risk there is that the springs could break and lock the clutch, which makes it a little tougher to drive, but I think that is fairly rare on the more recent clutch types, they just get noisey.
Yeah that is my worry, no idea if they will just stay noisy or if they will cause any damage or get me stuck somewhere or if the knocking noise is coming from the clutch, guess I need to get it looked at by a pro..
Good point about the warranty, I might give that a go, they were not that helpful the last time and I had to get in touch with LR about it, the finally agreed to change my clutch out at 60k, bit said there is no warranty on clutches after 20k, which seems bollocks to be honest.
Will do more research on aftermarket clutches, just in case and thinking about it now, if I could get a good HD clutch to fit I would probably pay for the peace of mind.
thanks
If you are planning any major trip, then track down the noise and fix. The last thing you want is to be without a clutch in some remote place - that would really wreck the trip, and potentially destroy your wallet.
