Are rear mud flaps legally required on defenders?

So i just ripped my left rear mudflap off my D90, and was wondering if I legally needed to replace them .

I probably will, but was wondering if it was mandatory in Victoria to have mud flaps fitted?

Yes they are required and have to be the correct length from the ground as well. The police sometimes do blitzes on raised 4wd's and people don't extend the mud flaps. Mine you they would have to be wanting to get you for something if there looking that hard, if not that then something else.
    Cheers, David.

My understanding is that there needs to be protection from the centre height of the wheel.

I thought they needed to be a minimum height of 300mm from the ground.

We are talking about mud flaps not mud guards? I havnt had mud flaps for years as they were ripped off 4wding at least 4 years ago and have had no problems with rego checks or police series flaps are almost the same as defender ones AFAIK

$121 for a mud flap... (sigh)

Just got the quotes back from the dealers here in Victoria, and they are very expensive bits of rubber hanging off the back of the car...

I think I'm going to be visiting Clarke Rubber later today to make one for myself.

For something like that why go to a dealer - I would be trying Landie aftermarket suppliers.

You could also try "Purple Pig". I bought a large piece of rubber from then to make some mud flaps.
