My bonnet is the standard one, the wheel mount is a heavy steel plate with 3 long studs through the bonnet and wheel[land rover size], i have a sheet of chequer plate on top of the bonnet in the recess, works well.

Sounds like a good idea. Series III Stage Ones have basically the same looking bonnet as Tdi and Td5 Defenders and also have bonnet mounted spare wheels as a factory fit. The bonnet catch for these is a lever that is accessed through the front grill. Works very well and is easy to open with the weight of a rim and tyre mounted on the bonnet. Might be possible to fit this system to the Pre Puma Defenders.
Hi Warrick , not all stage 1shad the spare wheel mounted on the bonnet , at least mine didn't . The 110 Countys had a catch on the grill, plus a lock (seperate key) up until then all Land Rovers had bonnet catches on the front grill . they were well made and gave very little truble and simple to use . When Land Rover went over to cable I thought it was poor design and poor quality, not much more than a bike cable , exept 4 times the cost to replace . If your looking at other options have you lookedat the Jeep type on ether side of the bonnet ? cheers jimr1 ..
