			Td5 safari snorkel gasket

Just having a poke arround the truck this evening thinking about bigger jobs and just having a general 'maintinance' look at it and I noticed that the foam / rubber gasket that seals the snorkel to the outer wing has perished and cracked. Gave it a prod with a screw driver and it's ell and truly perished.

As it doesn't look too smart I'm going to have to replace it. Anyone done similar?

If so can you get the replacement part from safari and how much?

Otherwise has anyone used a different material with any success? If so what, where from and how much?

Pretty sure others will have come up against this and would appreciate their input.

 Cheers,

 Ian.

 Slightly related...
Also, are you worries about water ingress or aesthetics? If its water you need to have a look at the drain plug valve thing on the other side of the wing below the brake servo... 1.5" hole in standard air pipe work. It's like a t shape bit, with the hole in the bottom of the t.

Clarke rubber sell, adhesive backed foam rubber in sheets in various thicknesses, same the stuff Safari give you with snorkel kit, you just need to cut it to shape.

					Cheers,

I'll check out Clarke rubber, but having quickly eyed up the job of getting the snorkel off all of sudden I'm less keen, it looks like it might be a real PITA. Quite how you get to the bolts against the wing under the brake servo I'm not sure.

John, I'm always worried about aesthetics and sometimes worry about water ingress. As it seems the integrity of the snorkel does not depend on the wing gasket but I checked out that drain you mentioned. It's sealed up it seems - had a good feel and there is rubber right across it. Having seen it before still I wonder why it's there, surely they can't come out the factory with that drain open? That'd be daft!

Jon's right. Check that valve carefully. It's supposed to let out any water accumulated in the hosing but prevent water getting in - like a purge valve. Mine seemed OK until I took it out and pulled it apart - and saw that it was perished. Might not have kept water out going through a decent creek. Rather than buy a new one, I replaced the valve and the two pieces of hosing from the air filter to the snorkel with one continuous hose from Couplers in Malaga. About $25 and it fit perfectly. So far there has been no water build up in the hose. Also check the hose connection to the Safari snorkel. Mine had been installed years ago by a LR dealer but the joint was a real bodge job and would have let in water if I'd taken my Landy through any serious waterway. I'm going to Exmouth via Ningaloo station next month so I'll find out how watertight it is when I go through the Yardie Creek!
